RP workers honored by officials

Filipino contract workers in the CNMI and other parts of the world were recognized during a weekend Labor Day celebration for their immense contributions in boosting the Philippine economy through their hard-earned remittances.

Contained in a message prepared by the Philippine Secretary of Labor and Employment Benvienido Laguesma and delivered by Labor Rep. Araceli Maraya for the Filipinos in the CNMI, he assured workers of continued support.

“I have instructed the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices as well as the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to provide quality-driven employment services to our OFWs, taking into account their sensitive needs and vulnerabilities while they are away from home,” he said.

The First Philippine Labor Day celebration in the CNMI was held at the Nauru Building and honored Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio along with the Secretary of Labor Mark Zachares, Mr. John Chambers and L&T Group of Companies.

In his speech, Tenorio conveyed his administration’s appreciation for the support extended by the Filipino workers in the daily economic activities in the CNMI.

“Without your support, the CNMI will not be like what it is today,” he said.

According to Consul Julia Heidemann, it was a to celebrate for some 20,000 Filipino workers in the Northern Marianas and recognized various members who excelled in their respective professions.

For management and leadership, the Consulate honored Polberto Urcia, Danilo San Pedro and Wilfredo Ching. Recognized for their volunteer services were Patrocinia Mauricio, Irene Tantiado, Raymond Sanchez, Rafael Santos, Engr. Cecilio dela Cruz and Jesus Rebusada.

The Consulate also sponsored a symposium entitled “Filipinos Overseas and their Contributions to National Development” where participants directed questions and concerns to Heidemann, Maraya and other officials.
