The Northern Marianas College last Friday started its search for the new vice-president and other key positions after the issuance of 90-day notices to officials holding ungraded posts.

Following the board policy on recruitment, the job search announcements were first advertised within NMC campuses using “The Word”, its weekly newsletter.

Contained in its latest issue, NMC has officially opened the director positions for Development and Alumni Affairs, for Financial and Administrative Services, Vice President, Manager of the Business Development Center, Dean of Instruction, Rota campus Administrator and Radio Station Manager.

However, Board Chairman Manuel Sablan pointed out the need to carry out a full study on compensation in relation to professional background and scope of responsibilities prior to the search.

The advertised positions right away reflected the corresponding annual salary. For example, candidates for the vice president position can look forward to receiving an annual salary of $70,000 as indicated in the advertisement. While the administrator for the Rota campus will receive $50,000 per annum.

According to Sablan, the personnel committee should first consider the existing rates in the market in order to offer competitive package.

Although, such advertised rates are in accordance to the Board’s policy, NMC Personnel Manager Kohne Ramon assured Sablan that they are based on relevant market study.

NMC President Agnes McPhetres also reminded the board that the 90-day notices have already been sent out and people will soon be out of job.

The discussion ended in a vote count for the motion presented on the floor commencing the search. Sablan and Vince Seman opposed, while Abbie Cabrera abstained. But the motion was carried out counting the yes votes of the other four members.

Following the recent downsizing of NMC top management, only one vice president and three deans will be maintained. The restructuring is also expected to realize $20,000 savings and will allow the college to hire a librarian and instructors for health and P.E., nursing, business and accounting, and computer.
