CUC chlorinates the water to kill any bacteria and germs that might be in the water. US Environmental Protection Agency requires that any water that may be used for cooking or drinking be disinfected.

CUC has found that chlorine gas is the safest, easiest, most reliable and cost effective way to disinfect the water supply on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

Chlorine gas is injected into Saipan’s water at 26 points around Saipan. It is applied at rates and locations that insure that Chlorine is present at all points in our system and all consumers’ homes (called Chlorine Residual).

CUC lab tests for chlorine residual and for the possible presence of bacteria each week at the source and at people’s homes. Bacteria generally can enter the water supply through groundwater contamination or leaks in the pipes.

Wells are sited far away from any existing possible contamination and well heads are sealed to keep contamination out of the water supply. CUC has an ongoing leak detection program to guard against leaks.
