Bird Island beach improvement
Bird Island beach, aside from the parking area at the trailhead leading to the beach, has been left in a state of cleanliness and safety, thanks to the DEQ Clean-Up Brigade.
Some 25 members met last Saturday to pick up trash and litter at the Marpi site and managed to avoid rain clouds long enough to collect about 20 bags of garbage.
It was an amount smaller than last year’s clean-up of Bird Island and a good indicator that at least some island residents are beginning to show some signs of concern for the environmental condition of Saipan.
Coordinated by the Division of Environmental Quality, the Clean-up Brigade meets on the first Saturday of each month to pick up garbage and litter from one of Saipan’s many beaches and encourages interested people to volunteer their time for a good cause.
Next month, on June 5, the Brigade will be heading to LauLau Beach. Unfortunately, this is the popular site for the Brigade as uncaring island residents and uninformed tourists consistently pollute the area with their picnic trash.
The Brigade was alerted to the situation from an elementary school that has adopted the beach as part of DEQ’s “Adopt-a-Beach” program. The garbage has been too much for the young kids to handle alone.
Remember that participants who come at least three clean-ups receive a free T-shirt. Organizers are also working on a new gift for “Gold” members (those who help out for at least 10 events) and are establishing a “Platinum” club for members who participate in 25 events.
