San Vicente Elementary School has achieved more than the recommendations made by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges during its last visit in 1996.

WASC visiting chair Robert E. Maez told the teachers, parents and students during a recent forum that all recommendations were satisfactorily addressed and the school even surpassed them by a year and a half.

His team made their on-site review last May 6 and were all impressed on how the school made the extra mile in their academic work and physical improvement of the school.

Since accreditation now centers on Focus on Learning, San Vicente was commended for its documentation on basic mastery skills for each grade level. The school has pioneered this academic tracking.

According to Vice-Principal Janet Villagomez, with such records on hand they facilitate the transition of students to the next level.

In addition, the school established a structured and systematic assessment program. The school has computer technology in place, both in the classroom and computer laboratories.

San Vicente’s TV-video closed circuit technology program has earned positive comments from the WASC visiting team. This program has used the conference room to link all classrooms. For instance, while a fifth grade student discusses his science experiment with his classmates, other classes are viewing it at the same time.

The original visit of the WASC team was made in March 1996 and San Vicente earned six years accreditation.

After its mid-term visit this month, WASC asked school personnel to continue their efforts in fostering good rapport with the community.

According to WASC, the link will help parents to be more actively involved in school activities.

The school was also asked to continue the collaborative efforts among grades to help the transition from one level to the next. Likewise, ample support on curriculum supervision and instruction should remain. Its curriculum shall be aligned to the new assessment process which is SAT 9, and to focus regularly on assessing student’s progress.
