The Saipan Bankers Association has joined the Western Pacific Economic Council (WPEC), a non-profit organization which has aligned various private sector groups on the island to help deal with mounting criticisms against the CNMI.

In a special meeting of WPEC members last May 26, the Board of Directors forged an agreement to install the bankers association as member of the group.

Unanimous consent of the Joint Board of Directors and Members and Acceptance of Membership documents were signed during the special meeting.

WPEC is now comprised of five powerful business organizations in the CNMI — the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan Garment Manufacturing Association, CNMI Contractors Association, Saipan Chamber of Commerce and Saipan Bankers Association.

Reiterating WPEC’s definitive purpose for the preservation of CNMI’s local control of internal policy through the Covenant, the Board asserted by a unanimous vote its earlier position of local control of minimum wage and immigration and trade policy status quo.

The group’s member representatives are Ron D. Sablan, James Lin, Richard Szumeil, Kerry Deets and Joan Kosack. Richard A. Pierce is the WPEC executive director.

According to Pierce, WPEC will meet with their public affairs firm early this month on Saipan to chart activity prior to US Senate and House committee hearings in Washington D.C. set for later this fall.
