Gov’t. to look into RP Consulate complaints
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday assured officials of the Philippine Consulate in the CNMI that he would look into their complaints regarding difficulties in gaining access to Filipinos detained in the Division of Corrections.
The issue was brought to the attention of the governor during the signing of the CNMI-RP Friendship Week the other day.
A surprised Tenorio said he would discuss the problem with Public Safety Commissioner Charles Ingram to address the concerns raised by the consular office.
According to Atty. Araceli Maraya, since the prison takeover DOC has imposed a new policy which requires seven days waiting period before requests to see inmates would be granted.
“It has caused us inconvenience especially in cases of emergency,” Maraya told a phone interview yesterday.
Foreign posts are usually informed about arrests of their citizens or given easy access to detainees by host countries as part of the diplomatic courtesy practiced in the international community.
“Hopefully it will never happen again…I don’t agree with that,” the governor said, referring to the DOC policy.
