DPS: Zero tolerance for car insurance

The Department of Public Safety yesterday reminded motor vehicle owners that the full force of the Mandatory Liability Auto Insurance law will take effect this month.

The Department of Public Safety yesterday reminded motor vehicle owners that the full force of the Mandatory Liability Auto Insurance law will take effect this month.

“We will be setting up check points and road blocks this month to conduct third party auto insurance inspection,” said Major Clyde Norita.

This CNMI-wide insurance inspection was first scheduled end of March and was moved this month to give vehicle owners enough time to comply with the law.

However, Capt. Delbert Sablan said DPS has been demanding the third party liability from car owners involved in crashes since March. Involved parties are given seven days to show proof of car insurance.

Prior to the zero tolerance implementation this month, police officers will be holding courtesy inspection to remind them of the insurance requirement.

Sablan said the Bureau of Motor Vehicle is also not renewing car registration for those who failed to secure the third party liability insurance.

The DPS will monitor the percentage of compliant from the figures gathered by BMV.

Drivers who will be found without the insurance card will be penalized, including the suspension of license and a fine of $100 to $350 depending on the violation.

The DPS is also reminding motorists who have been denied from securing car insurance to avail of the assigned risk plan. Concerned parties are required to submit at least three letters of declination from insurance firms to the Department of Commerce.
