Last Sunday’s beach excursion at two separate destinations ended with a tragedy after two Japanese tourists drowned outside the swimming zone of Managaha and at the Dump Coke diving area on Tinian.

At around 11:55 AM, the Tinian police and medics personnel responded to a reported drowning incident and rushed Iwata Sutumu to a health center where he was pronounced dead.

Based on reports, the 27-year-old victim was part of the group of divers who went out to the sea with a local diver.

According to a media release, the victim was reportedly seen sinking by one of his diving companions and their instructors tried to rescue him. He was brought to the Tinian dock where the group was met by the DPS personnel.

Meanwhile, the police said Koichi Kano died while swimming in the popular tourist resort Managaha Island Sunday.

The DPS received a call around 10:30 AM who gathered from witnesses that they saw Kano, 67 years old, enjoying a swim before he disappeared.

Witnesses also told authorities that they alerted the lifeguard after they found Kano’s slippers floating. The lifeguard searched for the victim and rushed him to the Smiling Cove Marina.

Kano was reported to have been struggling against the current as he was turning back.
