Magcalas, Kakuze lead in Barney’s Junior Chess Cup
Hopwood Junior High School’s Paul Michael Magcalas now share the lead with Cavalry Christian Academy’s David Kakuse in the 1999 Barney’s Junior Chess Cup tournament.
The 13-year-old Magcalas defeated Christian Dela Cruz of William S. Reyes Elementary School and Jemar Javier of Oleai Elementary School.
Magcalas, like the 11-year-old Kakuze, now has 3.5 points.
Kakuze win came at the expense of Javier, Oleai’s Joseph Lagare and Jimmy Joaquin. Kakuze earlier drew with WSR’s Mark Ryan.
Sharing third and fourth places, and a mere half-a-point behind are Kakuze twin sister, Sophia, who also studies at the Cavalry, and Jovencio Camacho Jr. of Koblerville Elementary School.
Sponsored by Barney’s Restaurant in Chinatown, the round-robin tournament is held every Sunday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Nauru Building in Susupe.
Fifteen young players have signed up for the event, which is organized by the CNMI Chess Association (CCA).
CCA is inviting interested players to join active chess tournament to be held this Sunday in Nauru Building.
