CNMI heads to Palau for Far-East Baseball tourney
CNMI, last year’s Big League Far-East champion, heads to Palau next Tuesday to defend its crown in the 1999 Far-East Regional Baseball Tournament.
CNMI defeated Guam twice in the 2 out of 3 games last year in the neighboring island to bag the title.
Len Maratita, the only player in the CNMI Little League History to appear three times in the World Series, leads the local team, along with Tito Santos, Robert Bansil and Jerome Delos Santos – all saw action in 1998.
Maratita first appeared in the 1993 Little League World Series in South Williams Port, Pennsylvania and in 1997-98 in the Big League World Series in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Guam, Palau, CNMI and hopefully the Philippines will compete in this baseball tournament. The winner in this division heads to the Big League World Series.
This year also marks the first time the World Series will be played out of Florida. The championship will be held in Tucson, Arizona.
All four returnees said this year’s tournament is unpredictable. This will be the first time that Palau will be participating in the tournament though it did join the 1997 Far-East Senior League Division.
