Organizers of the Northern Marianas Sports Challenge yesterday appealed to the community to support next month’s event as they noted the lukewarm reception the sporting activity is getting from the people.

“In less than two weeks one of the biggest events in the Northern Marianas will be held and it doesn’t look like people are taking advantage of this unique opportunity,” organizers said in a press release.

In a bid to boost economic activities, attract tourists and encourage youths to engage in sports, CNMI is holding the Sports Challenge beginning July 8 which will be participated in by former Olympians and professional athletes from Japan and the United States, as well as media personalities.

The ten-day activities, which will take place in Saipan, Rota and Tinian, will include sports clinics, discussion with celebrities, competition, family games, golf tournament.

Organizers explain they are hoping to bring in more athletes onto the island, but lack of funds is tying their hands to invite celebrities like Jackie Chan, Asia’s action star hero, and martial arts expert Chuck Norris.

Among the participants in next month’s Sports Challenge are NBA player Austin Carr of the Cleveland Cavaliers, NFL players Greg Pruitt and Cleo Miller of the Cleveland Browns, Japan’s Daijero of Kintentsu Buffalo, golfer Mitsuo Hirukawa, and Rich Collins and Len Barker of Cleveland Indians.

Joining the list are two athletes currently employed at the Pacific Islands Clubs, namely Charles Agwo, former player of the Nigerian National Soccer Team who played professional football in Hong Kong, and Mary Scotty, who played basketball for the University of California. Scotty recently coached CNMI’s basketball team in the South Pacific Games in Guam.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I want to encourage all the youths of our islands interested in any sports to please take part. I guaranty that you will learn something,” said Bill Sakovich, chairman of Sports Challenge.

According to Sakovich, membership is still open. Prices are $10.00 for youth, $25 for adults and $50.00 for a family.

Sports Challenge organizers are asking the public to call 234-1001 for more information.
