Coast Guard to hold meeting
with boat owners/operators

The Coast Guard will hold today a meeting with boat owners and operators to discuss the Year 2000 preparedness regulations and how these will apply to Coast Guard-inspected small passenger vessels.

The meeting will take place at 5:30 PM at the conference room of the Seaport Division of the Commonwealth Ports Authority.

The Coast Guard says the mandatory regulations will take into effect July 23, 1999, and have a required compliance date of August 1, 1999.

The purpose of these regulations is to collect information on the Y2K preparedness of vessels and facilities operating in the U.S. waters between August 1, 1999 and March 31, 2000. This information will be used by the Captain of the Port to assess a vessel’s Y2K risks and to determine if it needs operational restrictions.

Failure to submit the required information may result in a vessel being considered high risk.

All owners/operators of Coat Guard-inspected small passenger vessels are encouraged to attend.

Also in the agenda is discussion on the Y2K problem and how it affects that maritime community and review of the new regulations and compliance.
