Teno names Pfund acting AG
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio has appointed Sally Pfund as acting Attorney General to replace Maya B. Kara who is on vacation.
But the appointment would last for only 30 days as it was made to comply with the law that require officials in acting capacity to hold the post for only that period.
Kara, whose nomination was withdrawn by the governor last year in the wake of clear Senate rejection, will be re-appointed as acting chief government lawyer after a month, Tenorio said yesterday.
“She has not been confirmed yet and a nominee can only serve for a 30-day period so I have no choice but to appoint other AG to take care of that,” he told reporters.
Tenorio also disclosed that he was supposed to submit to the Senate Executive Appointments and Governmental Investigations the names of three new nominees to various government boards, but decided against it to further review the appointments.
“I’m working on the other nominee again because there are some nominations where when we approach some people, we have been assured that they want to serve the board, but we can’t pick another if they decide to change their mind,” he said.
On a Senate report that the appointment of a director of the Board of Education is not valid, Tenorio said he has asked the AGO to provide him previous legal opinions on her nomination.
Board member Connie Seman allegedly was not confirmed by the Senate when former governor Froilan C. Tenorio named her to the body in 1997. EAGI is asking the present governor to determine her status.
“I want to make sure that (they comply with the) requirement that some board members have to be confirmed by the Senate. if they are not acted and they are not confirmed, then they can’t serve,” Tenorio said.
