Government Workers are gearing up for the Labor Day picnic celebration, dubbed the “Last Bash of the Millennium.”

According to Marianne Concepcion-Teregeyo, secretary for the executive committee and chairwoman for programs and publicity, the Labor Day picnic has been a tradition among government employees.

This year’s grand celebration will be held on Sunday, Sept. 5, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, at the American Memorial Park, west of Bell Tower.

The committee promises the celebration to be even bigger and better as it will be the last labor day celebration of the millennium.

Traditionally, each government department or agency is tasked with providing their own food and drinks, and everyone is welcome to sample the food from various departments.

Entertainment will be provided by local artists such as the Olomway Band, Lucia Mendiola, soloist, Hoapili Hula Studio, and the Boyz/Girlz 2 Mix.

Government workers will also be vying for the perpetual trophy currently in the house of the Department of Public Safety, which won the trophy away from the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation on the Labor Day picnic last year.

To compete for the trophy, each department’s employees must compete in the co-ed softball, co-ed volleyball, tug of war and the obstacle course, which consists of a run, law crawl, kayak, tire race, and three-legged race.

Other games in the non-competition category include coconut husking, as well as a traditional “greasy pig contest” where the person who catches the pig sets to keep and raise it.

There will also be water melon or the hot pepper eating contest, as well as children’s games, such as a 20-yard race, limbo, sack race and a giant balloon house with dozens and dozens of balloons flying inside from Me’Mongs.

Local officials will deliver speeches.

Hot 98 and KZMI 103.9 radio station will broadcast the event live from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm..

The committee will be interviewed on Power 99’s morning show on Thursday from 8:00 am to 8:30 am.

The public is invited to join the celebration.
