Youth Congress elections slated on Sept. 20
Elections for the Second Youth Congress will be held on Sept. 20 in the Commonwealth and students as well as other young people aged 14 to 21 in the community are urged to vote for their senators.
House Majority Floor Leader Ana S. Teregeyo, who has been supporting the legislative body, encouraged them to go out and choose their leaders who will represent them well in such a political forum.
She said that most members of the 28-member congress will seek re-election after their first year proved to be “more of a trial and error” for the youth senators.
“I’m sure that the second time around will be a lot better than the first. I sincerely hope that they come out and select their representatives, knowing that they can really contribute to the welfare of this community,” Teregeyo said.
Youth Congress organizing committee has wound up registration of the estimated 4,000 youths in the CNMI between the ages of 14 to 21 as it steps up information campaign for the Sept. 20 polls.
This will be the second time that the Youth Congress will be set up in the Commonwealth after the enactment of the statute in 1993.
Voters must be within the age bracket and residing for at least 10 months in the election district where they will register. All citizens, whether U.S. or non-residents, are welcome to participate.
Twenty-eight young lawmakers, who will then be called senators, will be elected into office, each serving a one-year term. They will be adopting resolution for consideration by the CNMI legislature and the governor.
The congress will provide a venue for the youths to voice out their concerns and discuss issues which are important to them, according to Teregeyo. (BS)
