Tiempon Aleman: German Rule in the Northern Mariana Islands
On November 17,1999 the Northern Mariana Islands Museum of History and Culture will reflect upon the centennial of the German colonial administration with the opening of a new exhibit entitled, Tiempon Aleman: German Rule in the Northern Mariana Islands 1899-1914. Exhibit will run until May 15, 2000.
Through a grant from the Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities, over 50 black and white photographs from the Georg Fritz collection of the Historic Preservation Office will be shown along with many other documents and artifacts from the German period including stamps, letters, maps, and archaeological materials. The original Posthausschild or sign from the Saipan post office will be on loan from a museum in Frankfurt, Germany until May, 2000. A commemorative booklet, which serves as a catalog to the exhibit, has also been prepared for this occasion.
The public is invited to attend a brief outdoor presentation at 6:00 p.m. introducing official representatives from the German Embassy in the Philippines and the CNMI government, followed by a special preview of the exhibit.
For those who obtain tickets ($20 each, sold in advance at various locations, and on-site Nov. 17th), German-style food and drink prepared by a local franchise will be available on the grounds of the Museum until 9:00 p.m..
