Democratic Party vows to promote open gov't
Saying that “secrecy breeds corruption,” Democratic Party candidates vow to promote an open government if elected into office.
“The Democratic Party believes that an open government builds trust and affirms accountability of public officials,” the party’s platform states.
The party urged the government to observe the CNMI Freedom of Information Act or FOI, which provides the public access to information pertaining to government operations, records, an activities.
The Democrats said FOI must become “the household word” in all government departments and agencies.
“Elected and appointed officials should at all times show and demonstrate a high degree of respect for laws and order that they may become shining examples for our community,” the party said.
The Democratic candidates promised that if elected, they would insure that the community is regularly provided with calendars of public hearings and forum to allow them to participate in the discussion of issues affecting public life.
The party also focuses on improving public roads and providing “an efficient transportation system throughout the Commonwealth.”
The party said its road improvement program would also involve improvement in traffic management, and installation of more traffic lights.
The Democrats were guest speakers at yesterday’s forum organized by the Student Council of the Northern Marianas College.
They said they look forward to taking over the Legislature from the Republicans, saying that the declining economic condition in the CNMI gives a signal for a change of leadership in the policy making body.
