The U.S. Post Office handed over 12 used Jeeps to the CNMI government last week in a brief ceremony at the administration building in Capitol Hill.

Leo B. Tudela, director for Asia-Pacific International Business Of the U.S. Post Office, turned over the keys to Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio. The jeeps, used in the state of Hawaii, were refitted and repainted before shipped to Saipan.

“We are very grateful for the cooperation and support that the CNMI Government has given to the U.S. Postal Service,” Mr. Tudela said.

He said he was particularly grateful for the support the postal office has received in the leasing of the property in Chalan Kanoa for one dollar a year for 25 years. The recently completed post office will be officially opened in early January 2000.

Mr. Tudela said that he also turned over six excess jeeps each to the Republic of Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia and three to the Republic of the Marshall Islands for use by the respective governments.

The governor expressed his appreciation to the U.S. Postal Service for the excess jeeps, which he said, will be turned over to various agencies of the local government.

The distribution of the jeeps are as follows: two for Tinian, two for Rota, two for the Mayor of Saipan, two for the Commonwealth Ports Authority, two for the Division of Customs, and two for the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation.

The CNMI government paid for the shipment of the vehicles from Honolulu.

Mr. Tudela said there are excess light trucks that are available if the government wants them.
