Cooperation and collaboration between the private and public sector was the key to the success of the Garapan Street Market’s grand opening last night at Saipan’s main tourist district.

Hundreds of residents and visitors flocked to the 3rd and 4th Streets of Garapan to take part in the inaugural, which blends local food, live music and cultural performances.

Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio lauded organizers for their hard work in making the event a reality. He said the idea first came up at the Governor’s Economic Revitalization Task Force and was inspired by the success of the Taste of the Marianas held earlier this year. At least seven government agencies teamed up with the private sector to make the event a success.

“By working together, this project has succeeded,” the governor said. “I’m especially proud tonight to say that this cooperation will go a long way to promote not only a more positive image for Garapan, but also a stronger community spirit throughout the entire CNMI,” Mr. Tenorio said.

Governor agencies working with the Garapan Street Market committee include CUC for hooking up power sources; Department of Public Works for building the stage and cleanup; Department of Public Health for educating vendors on proper food handling, Department of Public Safety for traffic and pedestrian control, Saipan Mayor’s
Office for logistical support, Arts Council for recruiting entertainers, and Marianas Visitors Authority for promoting the event here and abroad.

Organizers believe the weekly street market will present island residents and visitors more opportunities to enjoy entertainment with their families.
