Man killed in Dandan fire

A 31-year-old man died in a fire that hit a residence in Dandan early Sunday morning, according to a police report.

The victim was identified as Joy Valmonte Almeron, a Filipina.

The report said his body was discovered shortly after firefighters from the Department of Public Safety arrived on the scene at around 3:00 a.m.

Mr. Almeron was found unconscious in a room where the fire was believed to have started.

The victim was pronounced dead at the Commonwealth Health Center at around 4:53 a.m.

Tourist missing

Police are searching for a 30-year-old tourist who was believed to have drowned off the waters in Marpi after taking a dive on New Year’s Day.

Based on preliminary police reports, Shen Hongwen, a Chinese national, left the hotel at around 12:30 p.m. to go diving. Shen’s friend notified the Department of Public Safety after the victim failed to return to the hotel.

At around 8:07 p.m., DPS officials were dispatched to the scene are still conducting the search as of press time.

4 hurt in vehicular accident

Four people were injured when a light green sedan they were riding slammed into a CUC power pole Saturday in front of the Marianas Medical Center in San Antonio.

An initial traffic report provided to the media said the car was headed north on Beach Road when the driver lost control of the steering wheel and ran off the road before hitting the power pole at dawn.

The occupants, Terry S. Akaempek, 24, Palauan/Chuukese; Jun Tae Um, 18, Korean national; Julio Gibson, 19, Chuukese; and Dipingei Iowanis, (age was not provided in the report, Chuukese; all sustained injuries and were brought to the hospital for treatment., according to police. (Lucy Rosario)
