A former police officer was arrested on New Year’s Day for mauling the manager of Koreana Hotel in Chalan Kanoa, according to sources from the Department of Public Safety.

Policemen who responded to the scene at around 6:00 a.m. caught Daniel Martinez, 43, still punching Dong Youl Kim, sources said.

Mr. Martinez was last assigned at the Division of Corrections until he was fired in December 1999 due to alleged drinking problems. Police sources said he had been arrested twice for DUI in the past.

He was also the office-on-duty when prisoners Shawn Appleby, Melvin Basa and Geronimo Ada bolted out of prison on Oct. 10, 1999.

Charges of disturbing the peace and assault and battery are being prepared against Mr. Martinez.
