History repeating itself

I hope that this letter will clear why Representative-elect Benigno Fitial formed a coalition made of four Republicans, one Independent and five Democrats.

During his campaign, he told the public that he aspired to become a speaker.

Some Republicans had different thoughts who would be the future speaker in the 12th Legislature. It was unfortunate that Rep. Heinz Hofschneider believed that he could master enough votes for the speaker set but Republicans were split in making their choice.

The Democrats offered Mr. Hofschneider the speaker seat but he turned down the Democrats offer because Republicans had enough votes to master.

After many days of waiting, the Democrats got an offer from Mr. Fitial for their support in the upcoming speaker. The Democrat. with open mind, accepted the offer. Yesterday, Jan. 4, they affirmed their support to Mr. Fitial. This led to Mr. Dino Jones’s refusal of the Republican offer to make him speaker in the 12th Legislature since Mr. Hofschneider cannot master enough Republicans’ votes.

Kudos to Mr. Jones for refusing the offer to him by the Republican Party. He deserved the highest esteem and respect from his colleagues.

This brought back unpleasant memories from what happened in the 7th Legislature. History repeats itself.
