Fiji's native birds disappearing

SUVA, Fiji Islands---The National Trust of Fiji said the country's native birds, such as the kaka and kula, are fast approaching low levels and that nothing is being done to protect them.

SUVA, Fiji Islands—The National Trust of Fiji said the country’s native birds, such as the kaka and kula, are fast approaching low levels and that nothing is being done to protect them.

The organization said the number of such birds is diminishing due to the growing numbers of introduced birds such as mynahs, Malay doves and bulbuls.

Forest habitat destruction by commercial logging, agriculture, burning, and illegal bird trading is also taking a huge toll on the native bird population. (PIR)
