Future bright for new radio station
If the number of people who went to the American Memorial Park to watch the musical extravaganza that signaled the grand launching of Saipan’s newest radio station is any indication, observers believe 101.1 KCNM Music of the Pacific has a bright future.
KCNM-FM general manager Joe Tighe said the turnout of residents who trooped the American Memorial Park Saturday showed the new station, which exclusively plays island music, has the potential to generate a big following.
“The huge success of the concert, coupled with the stunning number of people in the audience, demonstrate clearly that the CNMI has a new number one radio station,” Mr. Tighe said.
National Park Service officials estimated the crowd at the Music of the Pacific concert to have reached between 2,000 and 4,000. The concert was scheduled to end by 6:00 p.m. but dragged on until an hour later due to the crowd’s clamor for more numbers from the Olomwaay Band.
“It’s a station that reflects the culture of the people of the CNMI, and respects their taste in music, rather than simply importing music from other locations,” Mr. Tighe pointed out.
“It is obvious that 101.1 FM Music of the Pacific has a large listening audience,” he continued, describing the turnout of people during the Saturday afternoon concert “spectacular.”
Police reported no disturbances at the event, while organizations who sold food and drinks during the seven-hour musical extravaganza, which was sponsored by Pacific Trading Inc., reported healthy profits.
