Red Cross to hold walkathon in March
The Red Cross announced that the chapter will be holding its 14th Annual Walkathon on Saturday, March 18, 2000 again on the Beach Road Pathway.
Walkathon Committee Chairperson Monica Perez said, “This event is in its 14th year and in trying to improve the event and make it more relevant to the community we have opted for a carnival theme that promises fun for the entire family and most especially the many youth that will come out for the event.”
The last few years the Walkathon has drawn the attendance of the island’s youths and the entire community by the hundreds. With the change in the pathway two years ago, the increase in education efforts during the month of March and the ever-present need for the Red Cross funds this year, the planning committee is going all out.
“We want to make the event one that not only promotes the Red Cross, but also promotes the youth and healthy behaviors at the same time. When someone in the community can bring activities such as walking into their life, the chances of an emergency requiring CPR decreases. It’s all tied together in the Red Cross mission of helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.”
Walkathon forms will be available by the third week of February and anyone interested in sponsoring the event, joining the planning committee or in volunteering is encouraged to call the chapter at 234-3459.
