The Philippine Consulate on Saipan will launch on Saturday the third annual Presidential Awards aimed at recognizing the achievements of overseas Filipinos and organizations at the Filipino Workers Resource Center in Susupe.

Consul Julia Heidemann said a delegation from the Philippine government’s Commission on Filipinos Overseas will be arriving on Saipan to take part in the official launching of the Year 2000 search for Presidential Awardees.

The CNMI, which is home to almost 20,000 overseas Filipino workers, is one of the eight countries where the Presidential Awards will be launched, according to Ms. Heidemann.

The award, which is coordinated by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs’ CFO, will cover outstanding overseas-based Filipinos and organizations.

Ms. Heidemann said awardees will be flown to Manila to accept their medal from Philippine President Joseph E. Estrada in Malacanang, adding that there were five nominees from the CNMI-based Filipinos last year.

The Presidential Award is being conferred to outstanding individuals and organizations that have made a great impact to the lives of Filipinos or their country.

The award recognizes the overseas Filipinos’ contribution to the upliftment of their countrymen’s and their country’s honor.

A Canada-based inventor bested nominees from other countries and chalked up the prestigious Presidential Award last year.

At present, over six million Filipinos are scattered around the world. Majority of them are in the United States, as well as countries in the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Ms. Heidemann is urging Filipino workers and organizations on Saipan to prepare their nomination for the coveted awards. Both application and nomination can be submitted to the Philippine Consular Office in Susupe.
