6 MCS students inducted into honor society
Six students from Mount Carmel Middle School were inducted into membership of the National Junior Honor Society yesterday at the Mount Carmel Cathedral.
Students inducted were Anneka M. Hofschneider, Andrew Moses, Alaysha Mafnas Muna, Juanet Sablan, Carl Joshua M. Sumalpong, and Jonathan T. Teregeyo.
Present during the ceremonies were Mount Carmel School president Margaret Dela Cruz, grade school principal Michael Miller, elementary school vice principal Emillia Camacho, middle school vice principal Todd Blahnik, and the entire 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes with their teachers.
To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 out 4.0. Additionally, potential members must meet high standards of leadership, service, character, and citizenship.
Leadership is based on the student’s participation in community or school activities, or election to an office. To meet the service requirement, the student must have been active in service projects in the school and community. Character and citizenship are measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with students, faculty, and staff.
A faculty council of middle school teachers selected students to be inducted because they exemplified those high standards of excellence.
The Mount Carmel Middle School Chapter has been active since 1997, and membership totals 13, with the six inducted on Feb. 23.
The National Junior Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for Junior High/Middle school students. Chapters exists in three-fourths of the nations’ schools, and since 1921, millions of students have been selected for membership. Thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded to senior members since 1945 by the sponsors.
