Cyclone damage in Tongas reaches $4-M

NUKU’ALOFA, Tonga—The Ministry of Agriculture reports that damage to the kingdom’s crops from tropical cyclone Mona last week exceeded $4 million, but officials said the country does not require international food aid.

The main crops affected were bananas, breadfruit and cassava.

The capital island, Tongatapu, bore the brunt of the storm damage.

A. Samoa announces tax amnesty

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa—The territorial government is owed over $4 million by companies and individuals who have not paid their taxes.

At the same time the government is struggling to meet payroll obligations.

As a result, Governor Tauese Sunia, in an effort to boost revenues, has authorized a temporary tax amnesty program effective through April 28.
