The primary responsibility of the NMC Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is to strengthen the small business community by assisting the formation of new business and helping existing businesses to grow. The Center offers high-quality business and economic development support to small businesses and prospective small business in order to promote growth, expansion, innovation, increased productivity, and management improvement. Its mission: “Our business is your business success.”

Established in 1989, the NMC SBDC is Micronesia’s oldest business development center. It provides free business consulting services, no-cost or low-cost workshops, and training aimed at strengthening and diversifying the local economy by encouraging and supporting new business formation that will create new, private sector jobs for local people. In addition, the Center houses Micronesia’s first business incubator. Tenants of the incubator are able to start and grow their businesses in a facility that provides favorable rental terms, free access to office equipment, and business development services.

In addition to individual counseling services and group workshops, a new business health check-up has been developed to identify business strengths and weaknesses in five strategic dimensions. The check-up allows staff consultants to diagnose a business and determine those areas in need of assistance.

Through a generous grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Program, the Center will coordinate a series of workshops called “Business 911!”, which will be offered on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota during the first week of April. These workshops will be presented by Douglas Hammel, a business consultant from Olympia, Washington. Mr. Hammel is the author of the book “Business 911!”, and he has achieved a 100% success rate with troubled businesses that have followed his step-by-step approach to turning a business around.

If you are interested in attending the “Business 911!” workshop or learning more about what the NMC SBDC can do for your business, please call 235-1551.
