Last Wednesday, seven of Mount Carmel School’s 8th graders and one-third grader gave up a portion of their spring break to help beautify the beaches of Saipan.

At 7:30 a.m. Kristine Zepeda, Maricon Bricia, Christine Fitial, Sweeda Glad, Eloise and Ethel Castillo, and Jon and Jake Igitol met at a small table under large tree next to Mount Carmel High School. The students met to begin a three-hour beach clean up along the Saipan bike path, which stretches from Oleai to Garapan. The students who thought nothing of giving up several hours of their spring break, excitedly chatted about the fact that this would be a great opportunity for the soon to graduate 8th graders to give something back to the community.

Kristine Zepeda, organizer of the cleanup said, “This is a chance for us to do community service as 8th graders. We will only be 8th graders once and we want to make the most of it.”

Kristine’s mother, Tina Zepeda, chaperoned the students during the cleanup and said that the group collected four large and two small bags of trash during the three hour clean up.

With a cool breeze coming in off the Philippine Sea, and the cool shade of the trees reaching over the sand, the nine volunteers strolled down the beach searching for trash with smiles on their faces, goodness in their hearts, and trash-bags in hand.

These Mount Carmel School students not only strive to make a difference, but do.
