HONOLULU, Hawaii (PIDP/CPIS) –The man known as the “Father of the Internet” will give a talk April 10 at the East-West Center in Honolulu.

Dr. Vinton G. Cerf, senior vice-president for Internet Architecture and Technology of MCI WorldCom, will discuss the current status of the Internet and give his long-term forecast on the Web’s technical advancements.

The talk will offer an opportunity for those who are working to gain more insight into the Internet in order to raise the level of technology in the Asia-Pacific region.

“We also want him to comment on the social and political aspect of the Internet and changes it’ll bring about in society,” said Richard Barber of the East-West Center’s research program.

“He can alert people to some of the issues that are coming down the road,” said Barber, one of the organizers of the event.

Barber heard Cerf speak about Internet-related issues at the Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) a few years ago and has since been interested in having the technological wizard return to Honolulu. Barber is a former executive director of the PTC and serves as a moderator for its conferences.

Barber helped to arrange Cerf’s talk at the East-West Center after he learned from George Nakasone, Pacific Island region director of MCI WorldCom, that the Internet executive was coming to Honolulu to attend a meeting of the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE).

“He’s very entertaining and very knowledgeable,” Barber said. “I think it’ll be a good opportunity for people using or thinking about using the Internet to hear it from the horse’s mouth and learn what it’s all about from his perspective.”

Cerf and his partner, Dr. Robert E. Kahn, co-designed the TCP/IP Internet protocol and the architecture for the Internet. They were awarded the U.S. National Medal of Technology by President Clinton in 1997. In 1994, Cerf was named one of People magazine’s “25 Most Intriguing People.”

Cerf’s talk will be on April 10 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Hawaii Standard Time) at the EWC’s Hawaii Imin International Conference Center.
