Hotels and airlines booked for Tinian fiesta
TINIAN — Hotels and Tinian-bound flights are now fully-booked in anticipation of the annual San Jose fiesta here.
The Tinian Mayor’s office is branding this year’s fiesta as the biggest and best celebration on Tinian ever, being the first for the new millennium.
Freedom Air and Northwest Airlines, the only two air transportation services serving Saipan-Tinian flights, are already packed for the upcoming festivities, sources said.
Northwest Airlines disclosed it may offer additional flights aside from its regular daily flight schedule.
Even Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino, a 413-room hotel, will be jam-packed with guests beginning Thursday next week, management said.
The Dynasty is even expecting a hundred foreign guests to arrive from Taiwan via Saipan on Friday next week, taking up almost as many rooms.
Smaller hotels and inns are also fully occupied, as avid fiesta-goers started making hotel arrangements as early as March.
But Phillip Mendiola-Long, spokesperson for the Tinian Mayor’s office, said the community should not be discouraged from coming despite full accommodations.
He said the community should take advantage of the ferry transportation and make a day trip to Tinian.
He added visitors could come back the next day for other activities in the four-day event, as the ferry ride is free of charge.
Tinian Municipal Council Executive Director Janet King said visitors to the fiesta will essentially be spending for meals only.
“And this itself is a whole different experience because we would be featuring local produce and traditional food,” she said.
Ms. King said they do not see sleeping accommodations as a problem since Tinian residents have always welcomed guests to their homes for this special occasions.
“This has been done for years. Friends of friends or someone they know are always taken in like an additional member of the family,” said Ms. King.
The San Jose fiesta, which will coincide with the Tinian agricultural fair, will highlight many activities and surprises.
The affair is expected to draw some 5,000 people, according to the mayor’s office.
