In celebration of the Philippine Labor Day, outstanding overseas Filipino workers will be honored in a night dedicated to recognize their contribution to the upliftment of their profession and their country.

The local search for the most outstanding Filipino workers in the Northern Marianas was launched by the Philippine Labor Office early this year.

One winner will be named in each job category where Filipino workers are heavily concentrated. The winners will be presented certificates, scrolls and trophies and other prizes.

Filipinos working abroad have been dubbed the country’s “new breed of heroes,” because of their economic contributions by adding up the Philippine economy’s dollar reserves.

The Philippine Consulate and the Office of the Labor Attaché will also jointly launch a free health screening program for Filipino workers on April 30, 2000 at the Welfare Center in Nauru Building between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

Atty. Lily Maraya, Philippine labor attaché, said the launching of the free health screening program will coincide with the celebration of the 18th anniversary of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

The Philippine Consulate earlier launched the third annual Presidential Awards aimed at recognizing the achievements of overseas Filipinos and organizations at the Filipino Workers Resource Center in Susupe.

The CNMI, which is home to almost 20,000 overseas Filipino workers, is one of the eight countries where the Presidential Awards will be launched, according to Ms. Maraya.

The Presidential Award is being conferred to outstanding individuals and organizations that have made a great impact to the lives of Filipinos or their country.

The award recognizes the overseas Filipinos’ contribution to the upliftment of their countrymen’s and their country’s honor.

At present, over six million Filipinos are scattered around the world. Majority of them are in the United States, as well as countries in the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Ms. Maraya is urging Filipino workers and organizations on Saipan to prepare their nomination for the coveted awards. Both application and nomination can be submitted to the Philippine Consular Office in Susupe. (AR Fajardo)
