Public meeting set to discuss PCB problems

A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Tanapag social hall. The meeting will provide community members an opportunity to hear about the planned activities in May and beyond of several Commonwealth and Federal agencies to address concerns regarding polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination in Tanapag Village. There will be opportunities for community members to ask questions and offer comments and suggestions.

Representatives from the Commonwealth’s Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will be present, as well as Federal agencies, such as the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Topics that the agencies will discuss include:

• Health evaluations (DPH, ATSDR)

• Upcoming environmental sampling (DEQ, EPA)

• PCB soil cleanup standards (DEQ, EPA)

• Future cleanup plans (ACOE)
