Beefing up efforts to create a more technologically-literate staff, the Public School System now has on board its official technology coordinator mainly taking on tasks of providing technical staff training and ensuring that PSS’s existing computer networks continue running.

Formerly Guam-based, Mark Savares is the first “real” technology coordinator PSS has had the privilege of hiring, according to CNMI’s e-rate coordinator Nic Sablan.

Eventually, Mr. Savares will be taking over Mr. Sablan’s current role as CNMI’s e-rate application coordinator.

“In the meantime, I’ll still be the e-rate coordinator but slowly I will be transferring the job over to him,” said Mr. Sablan.

PSS hired Mr. Savares based on his knowledge of networking, expertise in both platforms such as McIntosh and PC, and knowledge on a variety of computer software.

Furthermore, Mr. Savares’ responsibilities will center on putting together $10,000 and above proposals for computer purchases and to see to the development of PSS’s revamped website.

Mr. Sablan also noted that a technical training on maximizing the use of telecommunications and computer equipment for teachers and staff is eyed to take place between island nations facing the same challenges in the field of technology.

Areas in the Western Pacific Region such as Guam, Hawaii, and American Samoa also eligible for the e-rate program like the CNMI, have the same technological concerns.

PSS and the Pacific Resources of Education and Learning (PREL) are eyeing a regional training conference which may materialize through a federally assisted grant sometime this year.
