Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday signed a proclamation declaring Public Service Recognition Week in the CNMI from May 7 to 13, 2000 to pay tribute to thousands of government employees on the island.

This is in line with the nationwide celebration aimed at promoting inspiration for excellence and dedication in public service across the nation.

“The services of our public government sector are broad and varied and have done much in ensuring a better quality of life and social posterity for the people of the Commonwealth,” the governor said in his proclamation.

Mr. Tenorio and Lt. Gov. Jesus R. Sablan joined dozens of government officials and employees during the proclamation signing ceremony held at the Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

The chief executive called on the people to honor the public servants during this week as activities have been lined up by a committee headed by John Oliver Gonzales, who is special assistant for policy and research at the Lt. Governor’s Office.

“We recognize that the missions of the respective branches of our Commonwealth government, in collaboration with the municipal governments, will not be fulfilled if not for the multitude of skills and innovations of our hardworking and deserving public service employees,” said Mr. Tenorio.

At the ceremony, the committee unveiled the logo for the public service recognition week and Labor Day 2000 celebrations, while the governor, Supreme Court Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan and Jesus SN. Lizama, executive director of the Legislative Bureau, delivered brief remarks.

Mr. Sablan underscored the need for the CNMI people to prepare for the challenges of the new century, saying that their strength and values acquired from the family will help boost the islands’ economy.

“We must make the right choices today. We must choose to provide our workers with the education and training they need to be skilled for tomorrow’s jobs,” he said.

“Work must always be about more than just a paycheck. Work is central to who we are and how we define our society,” added Mr. Sablan. “Through work and working hard and smart, we can pave a path toward a better, more secure future for all of us.”
