Tinian — Thousands of people flocked over the weekend to this island municipality to mark its annual San Jose (St. Joseph) fiesta, making it one of the biggest town celebrations ever highlighted with various activities during the past four days.

Mayor Francisco M. Borja estimated the number of visitors at more than 2,000, most of them coming from neighboring islands of Saipan and Rota.

“A lot of people on Tinian are very happy that we have as many as these visitors. It’s a good turnout and I would like to thank our people for warmly receiving them,” he said.

The feast of San Jose, Tinian’s patron saint and saint for the Catholic workers, drew islanders as the ferry transportation from Saipan had been full packed since Thursday. The 450-room Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino was also host to both local and foreign visitors.

Because of its success, the Mayor’s Office this early is planning several forthcoming events to entice more visitors, such as a proposed kick boxing match this July as well as concerts and entertainment programs, according to Mr. Borja.

The Dynasty is assisting the municipality to line up these events in order to boost the island’s tourism industry. “We are very aggressive in marketing our island,” added the mayor.

Fending off criticisms against their efforts to attract foreign investors and tourists alike by traveling to these prime markets, Mr. Borja said there is nothing than can stop them to improve the local economy.

“There are some people who will never be satisfied with what we are doing. But many people know that we’re doing this for Tinian,” he said.

Martin DLG. San Nicolas, chairman of the Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission, expressed support for the municipal government’s plan to step up promotions through various local activities. “The commission will do everything it can to assist our local officials,” he said.

Among the activities held at Tinian’s Park 2000 during the fiesta were the agriculture fair, the coronation of San Jose King and Queen, the San Jose procession, the island’s dinner reception, carnival rides and entertainment’s shows. Local officials estimated this year’s budget at $30,000.
