TES celebrates Chamorro Week
Chamorro Week at Tinian Elementary School, celebrating the island’s indigenous culture, is set for mid-May. Beginning Tuesday, May 16, and continuing through Friday, May 19, Chamorro arts & crafts will be on display in the Student Center.
There will also be storytelling Tuesday through Thursday, May 18, by the island’s elderly, blending with Mes Man Amko. Students will tour the exhibit, and delight in tales of long ago from our seniors.
Activities for Thursday, May 18, include a flag raising ceremony in the morning, followed by a Chamorro Spelling Bee for grades 1-3. A Chamorro Spelling and Oratorical Contest for grades 4-6 is set for the afternoon.
The Man Amko will lead off festivities on Friday morning, May 19, with their rendition of the Batsu. A fashion show follows where students will model traditional Chamorro clothing worn over the years. Next will be Chamorro-related programs presented by selected classes. To cap off the day, and the week, will be the recognition of the Chamorro Spelling and Oratorical Contest winners.
Parents and the community are welcomed to attend all the activities. The Tinian Department of Community and Cultural Affairs is graciously providing assistance for the event.
