BANMI-UFABA basketball tournament in June

The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands has given its go signal to the United Filipino Organization to hold the Philippine Independence Day basketball tournament next month in cooperation with BANMI.

BANMI president Ray B. Lizama recently met with UFO president Geoffrey Melchor to endorse the basketball competition under the newly-formed United Filipino amateur Basketball Association to be headed by Pastor B. Gagaring.

The tournament is tentatively set to begin on June 4, 2000 at the Civic Center Basketball Court with at least 12 teams expected to participate, according to Mr. Gagaring.

The league was formed in conjunction with 102nd Philippine Independence Day celebration. Two games will be played every Tuesday and three games on Sundays.

The league’s format will be a single round robing with the top six teams advancing to the playoffs. UFABA will have to abide by the BANMI rules and regulations and by-laws since the organization in now under the umbrella of BANMI.
