CNMI to host 19th PIBBA conference next month
Participants from five political island entities in the Pacific will come together next month to discuss timely cultural and language issues besetting the region.
“Our Languages and Cultures: The Challenge in the New Millennium” is the theme for this year’s 19th Annual Pacific Islands Bilingual Bicultural Association Conference which will be held at the Garapan Elementary School on June 27, 28, and 30, 2000.
Jesus Elameto, PIBBA local chapter president, said the conference will mainly tackle on the development of language policies as well as the curriculum using the bilingual method currently in use.
The forum will also touch on language assessments, English as Second Language (ESL), reading methods, and language learning theories, according to Mr. Elameto.
The CNMI last hosted the PIBBA conference in 1995. Last year, the forum was held in Kosrae in the Federated States of Micronesia which drew over 500 participants.
Mr. Elameto expects some 600 participants to attend the conference this year, welcoming another opportunity yet for the five island nations to institute possible federal assistance on its bilingual programs.
Prior to the conference the PIBBA local chapter is sponsoring a fundraising golf tournament on June 10 to prepare for the annual event.
Participants of the tournament will have a chance to win a brand new Mitsubishi Mirage along with 20 other prize items. (MM)
