Cultural Day at GTC on Saturday • School to celebrate Polynesian and Micronesian cultures
The Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary school will be holding its Cultural Day tomorrow, a whole day affair filled with activities celebrating the Polynesian and Micronesian cultures.
GTC is commemorating the event for the first time in two years, according to Vice Principal and Student Services Officer TJ Litulumar.
“We feel that it takes a lot of effort to organize such a celebration so we only do it once every two years,” Ms. Litulumar said.
This year’s theme revolves around “Diversity in Culture” which will tackle eight different cultures within the Pacific region.
To prepare for the event, students were made to research on the selected cultures of Hawaii, American Samoa, Tahiti, Northern Marianas, Chuuk, Yap, and the Marshall Islands.
Makeshift booths and stations will feature displays of what the students have discovered through their research, according to the vice principal.
Each class was made to choose an island nation to study during the last couple of months.
Furthermore, GTC’s Cultural Day will present traditional dances, raffle draws, food sales, games, canoe paddling, fashion shows, and coconut Olympics.
This event is being sponsored by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association who have been involved with the celebration’s planning from the very start.
“They have really coordinated with the school especially in the coronation of the cultural king and queen,” said Ms. Litulumar.
Activities for tomorrow’s affair kick off at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude at 2:30 p.m. (MM)
