A drive up the Airport Road has become more pleasant and extra enchanting these days, thanks to several flame trees standing in rows at both sides of the thoroughfare.

This reminds Northern Marianas residents that it is time for the annual Flame Tree Arts Festival which kicks off on Friday, replacing the highly successful month-long Taste of the Marianas, at the American Memorial Park.

Originally held in April, the Arts Council moved the festival date to June following requests from the Marianas Visitors Authority, said Festival Coordinator Cindy Macaranas.

The 19th Annual Flame Tree Festival will be held from June 2 to 4, 2000 at the American Memorial Park.

Organizers said this year’s new schedule for the Flame Tree Arts Festival will be more of a test-in-the-water decision. MVA is the biggest government sponsor for this year while the Arts Council received strong support from corporate sponsors that include Mobil, GTE Pacifica and Duty Free Shoppers Galleria.

This year’s arts festival will highlight the culture of every single ethnic group in the CNMI through production numbers that include those from Guam, the Marshal Islands, Republic of Palau, Yap, Pohnpei, China, Korea, Japan and the Philippines.

The Commonwealth’s Flame Tree Festival is the largest annual arts affair in Micronesia, established 19 years ago to promote the arts and culture of all the ethnic groups in the Northern Marianas. (ARF)
