Guerrero recovering after operation
Former Gov. Larry Guerrero is slowly responding to treatment after doctors at the Makati Medical Center in the Philippines successfully held a one-hour-and-a-half-operation to remove a blood clot and stop the bleeding in his brain after he suffered from a stroke Tuesday morning.
However, Mr. Guerrero is still under observation at the Intensive Care Unit. Twelve surgeons were on hand in the operating room as Mr. Guerrero’s condition is complicated by his diabetes and high blood pressure.
Mr. Guerrero, 65, left for Manila Monday evening to close a deal with some Filipino businessmen for a possible export of mango juice to other Asian countries. The two children of Mr. Guerrero, Larry Jr. and Frances, are now in Manila to attend to their ailing father.
The former chief executive was supposed to have a breakfast meeting with a business associate at around 8:30 a.m. in Heritage Hotel where he was billeted. Worried that something must have happened to Mr. Guerrero, the businessman asked the hotel staff to open Room 947 where they found the former chef executive, still in his pajamas, sprawled on the floor near his bed.
He was still conscious when he was rushed to the hospital, but had difficulty moving his left leg and arm.
Mr. Guerrero, a Republican, was the third governor of the Commonwealth. He ran but lost in his reelection bid against Gov. Froilan C. Tenorio, a Democrat, in 1993.
