Twenty-two-year-old Mark Wayne Torres yesterday pled guilty to charges of robbery and rape in a plea agreement before the Superior Court.

Chief Criminal Prosecutor Kevin Lynch agreed to drop the other criminal charges namely kidnapping and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Robbery carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and $20,000 fine, while rape carries a maximum sentence of 10 years plus $10,000 fine.

Investigation showed that Mr. Torres gave Xiu Hong Luo a ride to the Guma Husticia on Jan. 6, 2000 who was on her way to the court to attend a proceeding. Since the victim was too early for the appointment, Mr. Torres drove near Kilili Beach and parked his vehicle.

Inside the truck, Mr. Torres made sexual advances to Ms. Xiu and even suggested that they have a sexual intercourse, but the victim refused.

When the victim attempted to run away, Mr. Torres chased and brought her back to the vehicle where he choked her until she fell unconscious.

Mr. Torres admitted raping the victim and stealing money from her purse.
