Police officer charged for beating wife
The Attorney General’s Office has filed assault and battery charges against Police Officer Fidel Santos Atalig, Jr., 29, for beating up his wife and another police officer.
A $3,500 bail has been recommended for Mr. Atalig by government lawyers, but Superior Court Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama has scheduled a hearing on July 5 to determine whether he could be released on a third party custody and qualified to get a court appointed lawyer.
Mr. Atalig said he could not afford the bail because he earns only $800 a month and has to support five children. He asked the court to release him in the custody of his father since he wanted to go back to work immediately.
Based on a police report, Mr. Atalig went to the house of Police Officers Cecilia Taitano and Alfred Celes on July 1 at around 5:00 a.m. in As Lito where his wife at and demanded to talk to her at once.
Angered by his wife’s refusal to talk to him, Mr. Atalig stormed the house, grabbed his wife and started beating her up.
According to DPS Spokeswoman Rose Ada, Ms. Taitano, who is a relative of the wife, tried to stop Mr. Atalig but she got hurt and suffered as fractured thumb.
Mr. Atalig is still detained at the Division of Corrections.
Man who raped mentally-handicapped girl charged
Thirty-seven-year-old John Ikesil was charged before the Superior Court with the kidnapping and rape of a mentally-handicapped girl.
He is now held in detention after he failed to post a $50,000 bail set by the court.
Investigation showed that Mr. Ikesil picked up the girl at the Saipan Bowling Center on June 30, 2000 and brought the victim to his Chalan Kanoa residence where the rape allegedly took place. He then drove the victim back to the Bowling Center.
The girl’s mother reported to the police that her daughter was missing.
However, Mr. Ikesil claimed that the victim agreed to have sexual relations with him while the girl’s mother insisted that her daughter was not capable of making any decision.
Mr. Ikesil is now facing two counts of rape and one count of kidnapping.
