Grants needed to boost NMC programs
Beset with financial woes, the Northern Marianas College is seeking grants to fill a position currently vacant at its Grants office.
With depleting resources, the college cannot merely rely on the CNMI government to keep its existing programs afloat, according to Development and Alumni Relations Director Tony Deleon Guerrero.
He added that a designated Grants officer needs to be put in place to take charge of securing alternative financial assistance for the island’s lone college institution.
“This is a very important position because we need a person who will focus on getting the college financial aid and take advantage of the vast opportunities out there,” said the director.
The NMC Board of Regents has already given Mr. Deleon Guerrero approval to hire an officer who will oversee this need.
The grants officer will be mainly tasked to seek public and private funding for the college.
Included in his/her job description is the duty to assist the college with funding applications and proposals, serve as clearinghouse for grants funding, and provide technical assistance in grant application processes.
The officer is also in charge of disseminating grants information to appropriate NMC personnel.
“We are taking this step because we need to go look for federal grants or private foundations that will accommodate our needs. There are a lot of philantrophic associations right now ready to help our schools and colleges,” Mr. Deleon Guerrero reiterated.
The mission of the NMC Development and Alumni relations unit is to assist the college achieve its institutional purpose by encouraging public and private sector support and contributions so that it can effectively meet the diverse needs of the students and the community it serves.
As Development and Alumni Relations director, Mr. Deleon Guerrero handles Marketing and Public Relations, the Public Radio Station, and the Grants office.
Among the three sub units, only the Public radio station is occupied. The college is still seeking to fill the vacant positions. (MM)
