One of CNMI’s most outstanding students Ryan Dela Cruz Camacho was yesterday presented with a House Resolution in recognition of his exemplary academic achievements which he had earned while he attended schools in the CNMI and the mainland US.

During a brief ceremony held at the Hyatt, Rep. William S. Torres commended Mr. Camacho for being one of the 280 students selected to represent California in the Presidential Scholarship program in Washington D.C.

“Not only is he the first student from the CNMI to participate as a scholar but he also competed among 280 of the nation’s best students for the opportunity to lay a reef on the tomb of an unknown soldier,” said Mr. Torres.

Mr. Camacho was chosen to represent the state of California among a number of other contenders despite highly competitive and rigorous selection process where he had to submit essays and debate with other students.

Eighteen-year-old Mr. Camacho completed his high school education in San Diego, California this year and excelled in different subject areas.

But his outstanding academic performances started at Garapan Elementary School where he had spent his grade school years.

“Ryan is a model student. I hope that other students achieve the same thing and come back to our island as an asset to the community. We look forward to the day when Ryan will come back to the island and serve our people,” said his grade school teacher.

He also attended Hopwood Junior High School and Marianas High School before he transferred to the mainland last year.

“All the laurels belong to Ryan because of his accomplishments and at the same time for setting an example for other students in PSS so that they can achieve whatever goals they have,” said returning Hopwood Principal David Borja.

Mr. Camacho is set to leave the island this August to begin his post-secondary education in San Diego where he plans to major in English and eventually end up in law school.
He will also be joining the White House staff as an intern next year.

“I appreciate the fact that the Legislature has recognized the importance of my education as well as other students in the CNMI. To the students of the CNMI, I would like to encourage them to aim higher, to have motivation and high determination to achieve your goals and dreams,” said Mr. Camacho.
