Red Cross reminds public to prepare for disaster
The American Red Cross is always there to respond in the event of an emergency. Last week at 1:00 a.m., volunteers from the Red Cross responded to the family fire in Dan Dan and provided emergency assistance to meet the needs of the families affected. Family members were provided with food, clothing, shelter, and the Red Cross will continue to work with the families as they plan for their own recovery.
But no one can, however, replace the family member that was lost in this tragic incident and the Red Cross would like to remind everyone that preparedness and safety are the most important steps in disaster prevention.
While the time when a disaster such as a fire will strike is not known, how you respond to secure your family and yourself can be planned to ensure the safety of everyone.
As typhoon season is also now upon us, the Red Cross is also reminding families to be prepared before a typhoon strikes. Around your home, the Red Cross recommends that you get plywood or shutters to cover your windows, secure any loose objects and remove weak limbs from surrounding trees. Decide in advance where your family should go in the event of an emergency, and establish a family contact person outside of your area. It is also recommended to keep a three-day supply of food in case you and your family should have to move to a shelter because of an approaching storm.
Materials and presentations are available from your local Red Cross office or by calling 234-3459 on how to keep your family safe during disaster, how to plan for you family’s evacuation during a fire, and how to respond to a disaster to help others.
