The Mayor’s Cup Marathon scheduled for Aug. 26, 2000 has been postponed until further notice due to the lack of registration for the event.

Phillip Mendiola-Long said, “The Tinian Mayor’s Office unfortunately had to postpone the Mayor’s Cup Marathon due to cancellation from a running club in Japan and the fact the only 1 registration for the event had been received as of August 1, 2000.”

“A total of 50 participants from Japan were scheduled to take part in the race but had to cancel due to conflicting race schedules in Japan. With the loss of 50 participants and only one person registered (a team) for the event locally, our office had to make the call to postpone the event due to the large cost in the event,” he said.

The Tinian Mayor’s Office sought out corporate sponsorship from the Marianas but unfortunately no interested parties wanted to participate, he said. “I was really surprised that the corporations on Saipan did not want to sponsor our event. We were not asking for a lot money, in fact the Chamber of Commerce was sponsoring the prize money. Since, there were no sponsors and the Chamber of Commerce and the Tinian Mayor’s Office were the only contributors to the event, the cost to both entities were too large to continue on with the event with only one person registered 3 weeks before the event,” said Mr. Mendiola-Long

“We will not give up on this event. Mayor Borja wants Tinian to be the center for sporting events in the Pacific and we feel that a marathon will be a great addition to our sporting activities on the island. We will be working very closely with the Saipan Runners Club in order to make this event a reality.”

The Mayor’s Cup Marathon is slated to be moved to October or November of this year. For more information please contact Phillip Mendiola-Long at the Tinian Mayor’s Office or e-mail him at mayortiq@gtepacifica.net.
